Innovation in times of church change
Located right in the heart of the episcopal city of Paderborn, the Liborianum is a popular education and conference centre of the Archdiocese, with an adjoining guest house. The motto of this historic site: to provide an inspiring space for engaging with socially defining topics and to drive innovation and development in times of church change. This attitude requires an appropriate setting, which is why the Liborianum was comprehensively, yet carefully, modernised.
Even if fire safety requirements originally set things in motion, the Archdiocese was happy to use the necessary construction work to bring the historic building up to date not only visually, but also technically. Guest rooms, corridors, stairwells, conference rooms, the auditorium and the restaurant have been shining in new splendour after two years of construction, while the building’s historic character has been preserved. Many guest rooms are now barrier-free and stand out today for their modern, welcoming ambience.
Gerhard Gieseke GmbH played a key role in this: the old masonry was refurbished, round arches were reworked, glass and fire protection materials as well as new doors – now a specialist area for the master carpenters – were installed. wego vti supplied the building components and dry construction materials for this.

A partnership with a professional approach
Above all, according to the Liborianum’s guiding principle, is respectful and appreciative interaction with guests. A goal that the newly created atmosphere conveys in a coherent way and makes accessible. Respect and appreciation are also the pillars of the almost 30-year collaboration between Gieseke and wego vti. Torsten Weisbender, site manager on the customer side, says: “By now, I would describe our collaboration as a strong partnership. The Archdiocese of Paderborn has also continued to evolve. After two years of construction, the new, authentically designed guest and conference centre with contemporary comfort was able to reopen in the middle of the year.
Key project facts
The conference centre has 18 versatile seminar rooms with high-quality technical equipment, as well as 46 single and double rooms for up to 78 guests. The following materials were installed during the renovation:
- 15,000 m² of gypsum fire protection boards
- 47 Schörghuber special doors including smoke protection and/or T30/T90 requirements
- Coated gypsum fibre boards from Knauf Riessler
- Moulded parts and acoustic plaster ceilings from Knauf Gips
- Fabric-covered baffles from OWA
